dear miss rosa

when i get to be a composer

i'm gonna write me some new music about
daybreak in Alabama
and i'm gonna put the purtiest songs in it
rising out of the ground like a swamp mist
and falling out of heaven like soft dew.
i'm gonna put some tall trees in it
and the scent of pine needles
and the smell of red clay after rain
and long red necks
and poppy colored faces
and big brown arms
and field daisy eyes
of black and white black white black people
and i'm gonna put white hands
and black hands and brown and yellow hands
touching each other natural as dew
in that dawn of music when i get to be
a composer and write about
daybreak in alabama

baby it's cold outside

goodness it is chilly.

yes i know, i know...it is only the end
of october.
how am i going to handle
the next
4 months? i really struggle with
the
cold. i tend to wear liteweight sweaters
in the summer. i am always wrapped up
in something.

my nailbeds are already showing signs of
winter aches. they have the burning

sensation today and show a tinge of blue.
i can't even imagine dealing with january temps.
i may
have to invest in an electric blanket for
the studio.

i am going to have to go to sam's so i can buy
coffee and green tea in bulk!

thankful thursday

wabash collage - crawfordsville indiana

i am sure there is a blog somewhere that

supports a thankful thursday, but today
it is me.

it is fall break at our house. we slept in till
8am, bryce ran for coffee and i made him
eggs. good farm eggs. you know the brown
eggs, the kind we gathered as kids. i made
the kids hot chocolate to go with the impressive
breakfast of cherry poptarts.

as the kids play x-box [yes, i know i am a bad mommy]
and bryce reads the paper, our house is very quiet.
i gaze out my studio window, and the ground is wet,
but the autumn colors are still vibrant under the
dampness.

i am thankful for...

a husband who loves me [even though i am moody]
healthy kids who don't struggle in school
a best friend who makes me laugh till my belly aches
my warm comfy studio
many designer friends who inspire and help me daily
my full time job that is at home
walks with my parents
losing 10 lbs in the last 3 weeks
my swirly collage that should be arriving any day
and my "bloom" soul birdie ordered yesterday

and my new circle of creative woman who remind

me constantly that i can do this....amen

studio friday [lost and found]

hmmmmm....i could have posted hundreds of

items on this topic. i mean really, i am always
losing something. terrible a.d.d.! but that
is one of the woes of being creative i think.

i found this train last month while cleaning
out a box in the garage. it must have been
in the box for over 7 years. my grandfather
was a woodworker and made this while
my mom was pregnant with me. [he was
for sure i was going to be a boy]. it is
so dear to me. yes i know, if it is so dear
to me than why did i forget it was in the box!

have a great weekend!

10.12.2005

and it begins again

well holy shit...it begins again.
i swear my nickname does fit
[schleprock]. i am so like the
schleprocks on the flintstones.
i walk around with a damn rain
cloud over my head.

bryce and i went to his breakfast
meeting this morning, where i had
to endure athletics talk for more
than an hour, then we went on to
pick up my beloved saab. i hugged
and kissed her when they drove her
out. i know she wanted to get me home
safely. for cripes sakes, $2750.00 should
have been a guarantee that she could have
made it the 45 mile trip. well we made
it about 42 miles. right as i pulled off of
the 74/32 exit. i put her in first, then
second and third and low and behold.....
transmission out once again. so i try to
down shift, but no, i coast into the empty
eye soar to the right and wait for bryce
to pull up beside me. of course i had to
say nothing, the tears in my eyes let him
know that i was on the verge of a break down.

now i realize that life could be worse. at this
moment i could be a katrina survivor. i could
be a military widow. or cancer could be affecting
my life somehow. i always know i could have
it worse. but bryce and i have worked so hard
to downsize and live with a lot less. and still
we are constantly bobbing out in the middle
of life, chins barely above surface, waiting for
that next wave to hit.

sorry for such a blubbering post, but i am
whiped. i want a break. i have no motivation
to design at the moment. i need for things to
balance out, so that i can work on these jobs
that are piling up. i want to see the sun.
maybe by late afternoon we will get some
sun and get rid of this gloomy day

the saaba ends

holy crap....the saab is finally
done with its stay in the shop.
after 3 weeks i finally get to
cruise with the sunroof open
to steve miller's band [jungle love].

i can wait to go pick her up!
i've missed her.

studio friday [golden yellow]

well this is as golden yellow as i can get for this
week. i am quickly realizes how badly the
digital camera crisis is....i have got to purchase one!
this is gavin my neurotic yorkie. he drives me nuts

and is very camera shy. he literally hides his face
when i pull out my camera. what does this have to
do with my studio....he has a bed under my art table
and he sunbathes while i work! if i did have a digital
the photo would have featured my new golden
yellow and black tool box. i purchased it at
wal-mart for a whopping 4.95! i love that tool box.
i makes me organized!

studio friday

here are my most unusual items
in my studio. i bought the dish...
how funny, it has legs, at artist own.
it is an artist coop for women in lafayette.
i bought it even though i was broke. it
just makes me smile. it is one of my favorite
pieces in my house. the others are funky
bodies that my dad made in his studio. aren't
they crazy? he made them for me. we have
the same warped sense of humor.
i love them!

bobbers

i need to wake up! open the creative
gates and put my brushes to the canvas.
but i don't. i get so bogged down with daily
life. i can't seem to focus on anyone thing.
i struggle to fall asleep, so that by morning
i can barely get out of bed before the kids
get ready for school. oh to be the beav's mom.
you know the lovely, always prepared, always
rested june cleaver. i think june was a huge
valium abuser. is anyone that together.

i have so many ideas in my head. i have many
sketch pads, journal, paper clippings strewd
over my house [full] of thoughts, ideas....
why can i not bring them to life. i yearn
to find my own style. it is painful some days
feeling that sensation move closer to reality,
only for it to slowly sink back down. its like
when i was in labor with cheri'. i would push
and breathe, push more....rest. as soon as i
would rest she would slip back up. the anxiety,
the waiting, the nervousness.

my family is so supportive, they believe in me and
sometimes, they think it is so easy. when i mention
that i think i might do this, they always say [ so do
it]. SO DO IT. three simple words. okay, so where
do i start, who do i send my art to, who do i seek
out as an agent. how do i not look like everyone
else. where does the fresh come in? if i could
just DO IT...my design would already be in stores!
i would have a booth at the stationary convention
in NYC. i love them all dearly, but is it really that
flippin easy?

i feel like i am in the middle of a lake and cant
get to shore. my chin is just above the water
and i am bobbin ever so slowly in the water. just
like the ole red and yellow bobbers that my dad
used to attach to my cane pole.

i need to focus on a couple of things, but i like to
try everything. never becoming really good any
one technique. ohhhhhh i hate feeling like this.
i know that i am so blessed in my life. but i always
feel like something is missing and i know it has to do
with my creative self.

but where is it

gratitude...

penelopie has posted a fun exercise.
it makes you think fast. it also allows
you to understand the blessings that
surround us. so here goes....

1. lunch at urban elements with my buddy tom [he rocks]
2. golden paints and a canvas
3. new doodle pad
4. organizing my desk
5. the bee gees
6. laughing with my kids [patience works]
7. downtime
8. going to watch my brother coach varsity football...go warriors!
9. my own studio space
10. receiving my grandmas jewel dishware

where's your gratitude?

life

life is funny sometimes. i talk daily with women all over the
country and one in canada. very creative, kind and talented
women. as i visit their sites daily and read
their stories, i
realize how much we really are like one another.

we all struggle day to day with our fight to believe in ourselves
and our art. we have
all seen dark days. we worry about our kids,
partners and finances. we all work to
be recognized, yet somehow,
we sometimes just want to create and it doesn't even
matter if
anyone sees it. it is ours to own.

our world is so competitive and cut throat, yet these women take
the time to answer
my questions, complement my creative force
and share their stories with me.

chances are we will not meet face to face, but they are with me
everyday as i ready
myself for a day of work. and they are with
me in the evenings as i wind down from
a hectic day.

the saaba continues

oh the woes of owning a car....
of course my clutch went out last weekend
and i went almost a whole week without
transportation. tonight clancy and i
were heading to lafayette again - gabe
had a tennis meet. we stopped at panera
bread to get a decent quick meal and when
i went to start the car back up, it wouldn't
start! i wanted to cry, but i kept reminding
myself that in the grand scheme of life
this was fixable, and really no big deal.

so i ran into borders and found a pay phone and
called my in-laws collect. oh that's right, i don't
own a cell phone. oh no, not me. i hate them,
so i had to make a collect call, like they have to
do from the county jail after a nite of binge drinking!

sooooo....to make this painful story short. the lovely
folks who repaired the clutched didn't remount the battery.
it was loose, so we drove it about 10 blocks to some family
friends and used their tools to tighten things up. all better!

i made it to the courts to pick up gabe right as he was
hopping on the bus. maybe i will make the brownsburg
trip without any hitches!

did i mention that my in-laws

are my heros.

it has been a crappy 7 days. the weekend was filled with
sleep to catch up and try to destress from the past week.
i pissed my former boss off [ apparently took a logo job that
was somehow indirectly aquainted with her client ] [my client
says they were not] so i got burned and have been struggling with
that since wednesday. my reverse still isn't functioning properly
and i have clients that only give me bits and pieces of info and i
have to put more time into emailing back and forth than i do
designing the piece! not to mention to whole heart-breaking
debacle in the south...where the hell is our government, what
happen to the humanity. i find it hard to sleep right now. i am
one of the lucky ones.

i am dreaming about a quiet beach, tiki
hut bar, clear caribbean
water and a bitchin tan!

Nibblin' on sponge cake,watchin' the sun bake;
All of those tourists covered with oil.
Strummin' my six string on my front porch swing.
Smell those shrimp--They're beginnin' to boil.

Wasted away again in Margaritaville,
Searchin' for my lost shaker of salt.
Some people claim that there's a woman to blame,
But I know it's nobody's fault.

Don't know the reason,Stayed here all season
With nothing to show but this brand new tattoo.
But it's a real beauty,A Mexican cutie,
how it got hereI haven't a clue.

Wasted away again in Margaritaville,
Searchin' for my lost shaker of salt.
Some people claim that there's a woman to blame,
Now I think,-- hell it could be my fault.

I blew out my flip flop,Stepped on a pop top;
Cut my heel, had to cruise on back home.
But there's booze in the blender,And soon
it will renderThat frozen concoction that helps me hang on.

Wasted away again in Margaritaville
Searchin' for my lost shaker of salt.
Some people claim that there's a woman to blame,
But I know, it's my own damn fault.
Yes, and some people claim that there's a woman to blame,
And I know it's my own damn fault.

kelly and dad

Originally uploaded by indigochickie.

even at 6 months, i was by dad
at the game.

busy busy busy

i have just made it through another hectic weekend...
another weekend of very little down time, no time
to lock myself away and create....

i missed penelope's opening nite at the munce art
center....bummer. but i did get to see gabe perform
with the high school band. he looked so small out there
on the football field and i got to see my pal rex beat
a state ranked team. chs has never beaten danville
and the friday nite frenzy was exactly that. my dad
was a varsity football coach. i spent my fall evenings
on the field with my dad. i also spent the summer at
two-a-days. dad would throw my bike in the back of
the old dodge and i would sit in the back of the truck
for the 11 mile trek on the back roads of montgomery
county. i often wonder how i never fell out of that
truck! mothers would cringe today. we just went with
the flow.

to top off the whole weekend. on my way to lafayette
today. my clutch went out on my [new-used] 94' saab!
i had 3 kids with me. we have been struggling with the
reverse. it is manual and i have to put it in first and
the quickly jack it into reverse [somehow the rocking
back and forth eventually throws it into reverse]
and if that doesnt work, i have to have gabe push me
so i can get in a position to drive forward. we might
as well be ma and pa kettle. gabe thinks is it the coolest
thing to push the car. i am sure the transmission will have
to be replaced. so much for putting christmas $$$ back.

oh i am ready to slow down on the design work, so i can
put my create flow to work. the ideas are not only swimming
in my head, but i have sketches all over the studio. i am just
going to have to set aside an hour or two a day to create.

money vs art....oh the pain!

buffett...3 days and counting

8.24.2005

sore

i have started running again...

as bryce wakes me up, i moan in
pain and beg that we not run today.
but he knows that i am just tired and
once we stretch and get out on the road
i will be okay. and i am. today i ran a
whole extra block. hey quit laughing.
i am not a natural born runner. i don't
have long lean legs - i was blessed with
stubby chunky legs. legs that drag
as i run. which brings me to my next
thought - clancy

oh that sweet little cherabim - clancy.
she is running cross country, so i thought
if i train for the 5k again this year, she and
i can run it together. that would be a nice
mother-daughter day. so when i told her
i wanted to do this with her she snorted...
yeah that's what i thought. what is up
with the snort. of course i asked. she
explained that it was beyond the realm
of possibility for her
to run with me,
because i run like a dork!
such a blessed
little thing, she can't run with
me, because
i embarrass her. embrass her? what the

hell does she mean embarrass her. i am
the hippest mom on the block! my children
are so sweet, i just can't imagine my life
without them. i could just eat them up.

reminds me of wedding receptions when
bryce and i are dancing to a really great
song and i look over as i throw out the
fishing line to reel bryce in and cheri'
is sitting in a corner with a look of
disgust! my children just adore their
mother.

sad thing is pay backs hurt. i remember
watching my mom, as a child, thinking
was i adopted? surely god would have
never placed me with this. i often
wonder if i had been nicer to my mom,
my kids wouldn't be so hard on me.

doubt it.

mocha eyes

we took cheri' to iu today...
she really doesn't want to have
to go back for another year of
studying, but she knows she doesn't
want to be here at home either.

this weekend wasn't a good one with
her. she was very moody and pretty
much a pain in my arse. but as we
got closer to iu her mood changed. she
was laughing and smiling. she drove
ahead of bryce and myself in the borrowed
truck. and i couldn't help wonder where the
time has gone. she has gone from a very
active child to an extremely confident, independent
young woman. sometimes when she is acting
like a typical 19 year old - i have to remind myself
that she is just that...19. most days she comes off
at about 25-30. she has been such an ease to raise.

i know i really only have her 3 more years. i know
that when she graduates, she will leave me. most
days i am glad of that. i want her to spread those
wings and fly. i didn't do that. that is a regret.
but today watching her drive ahead. hand out the
window, playfully moving through the air...i was
sad. no longer that little girl with the big mocha
eyes.

yippee...the walls are painted, new furniture in.

i am so happy i left the work for someone else world.

8.15.2005

i am painting my studio today....
okay i'm not painting it, i have hired
someone to do it for me. we worked
out a sweet deal and it was worth the
money, especially since i have no time
to do it! cheri' will put together all
of my ikea purchases, desk, bookcase,
futon, etc. i will post before and after photos so
that you can see how pathetic it is now
and how great it will look!

when i look at the before pictures, i want to
cry...i cant believe i have worked in this hole
for this long. everything is at eye level, nothing
creative, horrible dark eggplant walls,
clutter-clutter-clutter. i don't know how
i am even creative.

to end on a happy note, we had a big family gathering
yesterday to celebrate my parents 45th wedding
anniversary. it was a great day

many viewers on my blog....but what the hell i'm in. swirly named me, so i will step

here are my five idiosyncracies...

1. i laugh like betty rubble
2. i always root for the underdog
3. i tend to be attracted to older men, yet i married
a man 10 years younger than me
4. i despise rude people with cell phones [i don't own a cell phone ]
5. i hate alot of noise and i am extremely claustrophobic
[ you will find me outside during

wedding weekend

our friend strasser got hitched this weekend.
i had the honor of producing all the wedding
stationary. it was very simple, crimson in color
[strass is a wally]. gerbera daisys [my favorites]
and best of all, when he and kristin recited
their vows...they meant them. you could
hear the enthusiasm. they are so in love

those are the very best weddings.

strasser lived with us one summer when he
was working at wabash. he brought us
pizza and beer almost nightly. we all sat
around and talked, and ate.
he is part of
our family.

one a different note...school is almost back in
session. cheri' will be heading back to iu. i
will have my hallway and closet back. yesssss!
gabe will have his bedroom back and we will get
back to whatever today is considered a normal
schedule. i can finally have some peace in the
house during the day. clancy and gabe will
have to settle their differences in the halls
of jr. high. oh the poor administration.

i will lose my husband for another 9 months,
i will be bitchy when too much falls on my
shoulders. gosh why can't i just deal with
this and move on. some days i think i am
psycho! maybe not psycho, but nothing
a little zoloft wouldn't relieve.

no i think i will just work on getting rid of
my [woe is me attitude] and embrace my
nine months of solitude.

yep thats what i am going to do!
remind me of this when i am
bitching and
whining
[ i could win an award for whining ]

this episode of 30 days work around how
people survive on minimum wage. he

how he could do it. if you have the chance
to catch this episode. do it. it gives you

weeks end

it is 5 o'clock somewhere...at my house.
this red stripe is oh sooooo good. i just
hit another deadline...yippee. oh the joy
of thinking it won't get done, new problems
arise, but you somehow dig in and hit it.

i have not had time this week to think of
everything thing that is going on around
me - the devastation in london, the horror
in idaho, our troops still in the middle east.

my day seems to go on uneffected. my
heart aches for all involved. my mind
wanders and trys to make sense. i will
never make sense of these crimes. i just
say a prayer for all involved.

so i say to everyone out there...many
blessings to you and your loved ones.
hold tight to one another.

power out

good morning world! how is everyone?
it is friday, it is a long weekend, and i
see a cold beer in my future. how sad
is it that it's 8am and i am talking beer.

we had a power outage last nite, just
on our side of the street. it was pitch
black in our house. i was, of course
working, then bam - black. gabe
screamed [a blood curdling scream]
[this really annoyed me - he is 13].
his friend, coleman asked if i had any
flash lites. i responded "of course we
do, they just don't work. God forbid
my lovely kids would ever turn them
off when they were done and put them
away. i don't know, say for a FUTURE POWER
OUTAGE! so i meandered through my house,
careful not to stumb anything, found candles
and that is how we functioned for the next
1.5 hours.

of course coleman had many hours of power
saved on his nintendo ds, so the boys were
good. i stayed with them fearful that the
littel pyro's would set the house a blaze.
[they could not leave the damn candles alone]
i saw gabe [my child] lean over the candles
more than once to retrieve something....
he makes me so proud!

it is amazing how we depend on modern society.
i was sitting there enjoying the candle lite, even
commented to them about can you imagine living
with only candle lite. they looked up at me with
their precious faces, then went back to the
flippin' nintendo!

i blew out the candles, and went to bed

simplify

you ever try to get organized? it's funny, the blogs that
i check out daily are all talking about organizing and
getting rid of anything you don't "love, love, love".
i have been totally going through the same thing.
since i have began putting together my studio, it
has been nothing but a sty...
so for the next month it is my goal to boot the crap
to the curb. if it ain't groovy, it goes. in the last
week i have filled 3 black trash baggies with
stuff that just does not matter in my life.
my kids hate me! so far it has been from their
rooms, but today i began in the studio.

next weekend...road trip - ikea or bust.
oh my gosh i love ikea. then the eggplant goes
and a cleaner brighter hipper color shall emerge.
pictures to follow.

the fat wife

so i have to say this entry really has nothing to do
with anything...but me and
my neurotic thought processes.
bryce [my very young husband] plays softball
every summer.
he couldn't go without playing. [i rarely go to his games].

but tonight, we were childless, so i went. as i walked up
to the 2nd field [
carrying a bag o' burgerking] it hit me.
i was a fat wife. please believe me,
i am not making fun
or mocking anyone over weight. but as i walked up
dreaming
of munching on my whopper w/cheese. i noticed all the 20
something
in their halter tops, and i realized now in my 40's
i am the fat wife. she is the
wife i used to look at with pity.
you know the one who went to cheer on her husband
as
he flirted with the 20 something during his game. yep that
is now me.

i ate the whopper with cheese anyway. only really fast hoping
no one would
see me chomping away.

on a very funny note...living in crawfordsville always brings up
the past.
you know very small town, very big fish bowl.

bryce has a team mate [can't give you a name] who i made
out with when i was about
19, at panhell [wabash college]
[he just moved back to town]. he also goes to my church.
can't even look at the man. he probably doesn't even
remember me. of course i remember it like it was
yesterday...warped demented soul that i am.

and even though i am 40, i can still make out with the best of them. so i keep telling myself!

thoughts

i am finally out on my own as an artist. the financial
security that i once knew will now be gone. but hell
i am excited. everyone's been so supportive. i have
to say, it has been a really hectic week. i have the
strawberry fest to get ready for, so i am making beaded
crosses, stationary and painting windows. plus working
on my side jobs [actually they are jobs, no longer
side jobs].

funny how little moments in life put things in perspective.

today, i attended my daughter, clancy's recital. [she
plays acoustic guitar]. i sat and listened to all the
talented kids. wondering to myself why the hell is the
state yanking these programs out of our schools.
one of the last kids to perform was a little boy-riley.
i had watched him earlier enter the school. he was on
a mission, he was excited and serious. he had a job to
do. rileys dad is irag. he has been gone most of the year.
as i sat and listened to riley play the guitar, tears started
flowing and i realized that as that little boy played with such
determination, he was playing for his dad. as he played
it became surreal, i could actually see his dad in the streets
of baghdad walking through the streets, monitoring the
situation.

i tend to forget on some days that we still have troops
in the middle east. and regardless of what my views of
of the war and the decisions that my government makes,
there are familys who sacrifice every minute of everyday
for my family. so to anyone who has a loved one protecting
me and my family...god bless each of you.
and riley...you rock!
